![]() I finally got the chance to go this past February (2023), and it was even better than I had envisioned! The people who work there are extremely knowledgeable of his life and his books, and it was such a treat to be able to be amongst such wonderful memorabilia and to hear about it from them directly. I've been wanting to visit Beaufort, SC for many years, as Pat Conroy is my all-time favorite author. There was no traffic congestion during either visit and it is just a few blocks from the downtown area of Beaufort, just off Bay Street. The center is about the size of a medium sized ranch home and there is adequate free parking. ![]() Books and momentos are available for purchase and there is a container available for contributions. Either way I beleive if you are a Pat Conroy fan you will thoroughly enjoy the experience. I opted for the latter and was not disappointed. You can pay a small fee, I beleive $10.00, to have someone walk you through the building and provide information, or you can browse on your own for free. This year, February 2023, I revisited the center and continued to read and enjoy the abundant information and personal affects relating to Mr. We had a very pleasant conversation, mostly about Pat. My first visit in February of 2022 provided a pleasant surprise when I met Pat's sister Kathy who was voulunteering her time at the center. "From time's bookshelf, Conroy selects some arresting volumes and some dusty duds better left alone. As a Pat Conroy literary admirer I found my visit very enjoyable and informative. He doesn't enjoy language, he revels in it. is a rich, unabashedly self-critical and moving tribute to a writer's passion.Like Stephen King did in his remarkable On Writing, Conroy reminds us of his considerable talents for telling a story and arranging words." - Associated Press He doesn't just visit libraries and bookstores, he inhabits them. He includes wonderful anecdotes from his school days, moving accounts of how reading pulled him through dark times, and even lists of books that particularly influenced him at various stages of his life, including grammar school, high school, and college. In My Reading Life, Conroy revisits a life of passionate reading. It would hardly be an exaggeration to claim that reading has saved his life, and if not his life then surely his sanity. But reading for him is not simply a pleasure to be enjoyed in off-hours or a source of inspiration for his own writing. He has for years kept a notebook in which he notes words or phrases, just from a love of language. Pat Conroy, the beloved American storyteller, is also a voracious reader.
